This easily digested plant is a natural source of calcium and may provide a nourishing diet for convalescents. Arrowroot is thought to be helpful in the treatment of indigestion, bowel complaints and urinary infections. History: Arrowroot is a perennial plant, native to South America that has also been naturalized in southern Florida. It is also commonly grown in Brazil and Thailand. Cultivated in tropical regions for its starchy rootstock, it is an important source of commercial arrowroot and tapioca. The Arrowroot plant is an herbaceous perennial, with a creeping rhizome with upward-curving, fleshy, cylindrical tubers covered with large, thin scales. The flowering stem may reach a height of six feet and bears leaves and creamy flowers at the ends of the branches that terminate the long peduncles. Growing in pairs, the plant's numerous, ovate, leaves grow to a length of ten inches with long sheaths often enveloping the stem. Traditionally, the starch is extracted from rhizomes of less than a year old, washed, pulped in wooden mortars, stirred in clean water, and the fibers then wrung out. Next, the milky liquor is strained, allowed to settle and then drained. Clean water is again added, mixed and drained, after which the starch is dried. The resulting powder looks and feels very much like cornstarch. Arrowroot's popular name is a corruption of the Aru-root of the Aruac (Arawak) Indians of Central and South America, who used the powder as an antidote to arrow-poison. Moreover, Native Americans in both South and North America applied Arrowroot to sores and wounds inflicted by scorpions and black spider bites, and the Maya of Mexico used it to arrest gangrene and smallpox. The many species of Arrowroot are usually distinguished by the place from which they are imported. Beneficial Uses: Arrowroot is now known to be a superior ca

The citric acid in the orange juice will help to mask any unpleasant powder tastes. Relieve muscle cramping and replace the vitamins, nutrients and potassium lost during strenuous activity with one of nature's largest herbs, the Banana. For natural energy and good digestion, Banana is the perfect supplement for active people. History: One of the largest of herbs, growing up to thirty feet high, the Banana is probably native to the Indo Malaysia area, but is now cultivated in tropical United States, Central and South America and other tropical and subtropical regions throughout the world. The plant is not actually a tree; its apparent trunk is not even a true stem. It is composed of very porous sheaths that terminate in large leaves bearing a single flowering stem. The flowers bear fruit in bunches called hands (a full hand consists of fourteen bananas), because the bunched fruits resemble fingers. After harvesting, the entire plant is cut down, leaving only the rootstock, which is considered to be perennial. Bananas supply important fiber, B-vitamins, and vitamins A, C and E (antioxidants), magnesium, phosphorous, selenium, iron, zinc, manganese, copper, potassium (needed for muscle function), trace amounts of chromium (which is necessary for enzyme production) and folate (important during pregnancy). Beneficial Uses: Help support your healthy digestion with Banana. It helps to relieve the discomforts related to diverticulitis, ulcers, colitis and heartburn. It is prescribed in India to treat indigestion, aspirin-induced stomach upset and other digestive tract discomforts. Banana is a great source of dietary fiber, which may reduce the risk of certain types of intestinal ailments, especially colon-related. In Central America, Banana is used as a remedy for diarrhea, and research has confirmed that usage. Bananas are rich in pectin, a soluble fiber that helps to absorb liquid in the intestines and thus move stool along smoothly. Banana also contains a good amount of inulin, another soluble fiber, which is a prebiotic - a substance that promotes the growth of beneficial bacteria (probiotics) in the intestinal system. In assisting diabetic problems, Banana has sometimes been u

The citric acid in the orange juice will help to mask any unpleasant powder tastes. Other common names: Citrus Limonum, Citronnier, Leemoo, Limone It's not just a garnish for your lemonade. Try our Lemon Peel for natural good health. Its high nutritive content (especially ascorbic acid) helps to build the body's immune system and ward off infection, and its digestive qualities help to ease indigestion, colic and nausea. Lemon Peel may also halt vomiting. History: Lemon Peel is the ripened rind of Lemons, which grow on tender trees that thrive in rich, well-drained soil in full sun with ample moisture during the growing season. Lemons are native to northern India, and are also cultivated in the West Indies, the Mediterranean region and other tropical countries throughout the world, but do not transplant well. The trees may grow to a height of twenty-two feet with green leaves and flowers that produce yellow fruits that are very sour. The name Lemon is derived from the Arabic, limun or limu, which, in turn, comes from the Sanskrit, nimbuka, a term that covers several types of citrus. The trees reached Europe by way of Persia (or Media) and were first grown in Greece, and then Italy in the second century. There is a great deal of current research being conducted lately with respect to Lemon Peel and its powerful constituent, d-limonene, a cyclic monoterpene (also found in orange peel) that causes G1 cell cycle arrest, but thus far, no conclusions have been drawn, and further research is needed. In vitro and animal data suggest potential efficacy of D-limonene in treating cancer, but human data are lacking. Further research is necessary to determine if D-limonene has a role in the prevention or treatment of cancer. Lemon has been an important ingredient in herbal medicines, as well as candies, baked goods, drinks and preserves, with the peels used in aromatherapy and potpourris for their strong fragrance. Some of the constituents in Lemon Peel include volatile oils, flavonoids, coumarins, hesperidin (a bitter, crystalline glucoside), a high content of ascorbic acid (vitamin C), protein, carbohydrates, fiber, calcium, potassium, phosphorus, iron and vitamin A.
