Other common names: Japanese Honeysuckle, Woodbine, Hall's Honeysuckle, Goat's Leaf, Kin-yin-keva Honeysuckle has been used to purify the system and stimulate the efficient removal of waste products from the body. As such, it cleanses toxins from the blood, intestinal system, liver and urinary tract. Often used in Traditional Chinese Medicine, Honeysuckle has been known to fight infection, lower fevers and enhance the immune system, and recent research shows promise in the fight against malignant diseases, HIV and other viruses. History: Honeysuckle is a trailing evergreen or partial evergreen, depending upon its range; in its southern ranges, it is totally evergreen, and in the more northerly climes, it tends to produce partial evergreen leaves and fragrant white flowers that yellow with age. This trailing vine bears hollow stems with long, light green, ovate leaves, growing vigorously through canopy trees, reaching a height of twenty feet and ultimately killing the host tree. However, it may also be found growing in fields, disturbed woods, flood plains, urban areas and on forest edges. In other words, it is a very hardy perennial that is even considered an invasive, noxious weed in many states, and its range is constantly expanding farther north, because it is so easily adaptable. Japanese Honeysuckle is an Asian native, originating in Japan and Korea, and has been introduced to the United States and other parts of the world, where there is wide distribution throughout Europe, South America, Hong Kong and where hundreds of other Honeysuckle species grow (including Lonicera caprifolium in Italy and the Netherlands). If you have ever seen children suck the sweet nectar from Honeysuckle flowers, it will be easy to understand how the plant's English name arose. The botanical family, Caprifoliaceae, is derived from two Latin words that mean ''goats' leaves,'' reflecting the fact that this plant was a favorite food of goats and giving rise to one of Honeysuckle's common names, Goat's Leaf. The plant's botanical genus, Lonicera, was given to it by the eminent Swedish botanist, Carolus Linnaeus

Other common names: Pride of the Meadow, Spiraea, Bridewort, Lady of the Meadow, Meadsweet, Dolloff, Queen of the Meadow* ''the smell thereof makes the heart merry and joyful and delighteth the senses,'' John Gerard, Apothecary and Surgeon, Herball or Generall Historie of Plantes, 1597 *Note: Meadowsweet (Filipendula ulmaria) is also called ''Queen of the Meadow'' and should not be confused with Boneset (Eupatorium purfoliatum) or Gravel Root (Eupatorium purpureum), two entirely different herbs that are frequently also called Queen of the Meadow, but have entirely different properties and applications. Suffering from headache, fever, arthritic and joint pain? Rather than reach for aspirin, why not try Meadowsweet instead? It is the natural version of aspirin without the digestive upsets that may accompany the synthetic product. It is even said to soothe digestive upsets, as well as the pains and aches of inflammatory ailments. History: Meadowsweet is a stout perennial wildflower that thrives in the rich, wet soils of marshes, bogs, ditches, damp meadows and moist woods in sun or partial shade. The plant, with its fernlike foliage, pinnate leaves and fragrant, cream-white flower clusters, dislikes acid soil and grows up to six feet in height with a creeping, underground root. Meadowsweet was introduced to North America from Europe and now grows wild throughout eastern Canada and the United States. Meadowsweet's name is derived from its older name, Meadsweet, which, like Meadwort (its oldest English name from Anglo-Saxon times), refers to the plant's use as a flavoring for mead, a honeyed liquor. Its botanical specific, ulmaria, is derived from the Latin, ulmus, meaning ''elm,'' referring to the resemblance of Meadowsweet's leaves to those of the elm tree. Meadowsweet was one of the three most sacred herbs of the Druids, the others being water mint and vervain; and in medieval Europe, the fragrant plant was considered an important strewing herb. The sweet fragrance of the plant made it a favorit

If all you want is a kiss, walk under a bough of Mistletoe, but if you are exhausted, irritable or suffering from headache or hypertension, try Mistletoe for relief. Perhaps more importantly, there are very hopeful and exciting studies currently being conducted on Mistletoe in the area of immune therapy, which show promise in building defense against disease. History: European Mistletoe (not to be confused with American Mistletoe, an entirely different plant that is seldom used medicinally) is a woody perennial that is native to Europe and Asia and continues to grow throughout Europe, as well as northwest Africa, parts of Asia and elsewhere. One of its most notable features is the white berries that ripen during the winter months. This European species of Mistletoe (Viscum album) can be found in the United States, because it was purposely imported in the early 1900s by horticulturist, Luther Burbank, to California as an ornamental from Eurasia. Mistletoe is an evergreen shrub with branches that may extend ten feet across with feathery leaves, yellow flowers and sticky white berries. Mistletoe is a parasitic plant and grows on young branches of deciduous host trees, such as firs, ash, apple, hawthorne and oak. As a true parasite, it assumes the varied nutrients acquired from the host plant; at no time does it receive its nourishment from the soil. The plant is propagated in seeds carried by birds and cannot be cultivated from the soil. One of the earliest writers to discuss the use of Mistletoe in medicine was the Roman naturalist Celsus (53 B.C.- 7 A.D.) in his work, De medicina, which is one part of a six-part encyclopedia and considered a comprehensive look at medicine during ancient Roman times. Mistletoe has been used in herbal medicine since ancient times and was considered sacred to the Druids who went forth in white robes to collect it (particularly revering the oak-gro

Other common names: Muirapuama, Marapauma, Muira Puama, Muira Pauma, Marapuama, Marapama, Muiratam, Potent Wood Muirapauma is said to be a powerful aphrodiasic for both men and women that has been used to correct erectile dysfunction and impotence in men and frigidity in women and is also believed to enhance arousal and prolong the sexual experience. Muirapauma is also used to relieve central nervous system disorders, digestive disturbances and menstrual difficulties. History: Muirapauma, sometimes spelled Marapauma or Muirapuama, is a South American small tree (or bush, growing to only five feet in height) that is native to the Amazon rain forests and predominantly the northern and northeastern parts of Brazil. It produces white flowers with a jasmine-like fragrance that is at once aromatic and pungent. Muirapauma is one of the most active botanicals with a long history of traditional use as an energy tonic, general health improver and remedy for impotence and sexual insufficiency. Amazon natives of the Rio Negro area have used it for centuries as an aphrodisiac for both men and women, and many different native populations have used it in a tea, which is slightly bitter (but can be sweetened) to enhance virility and impotence. It is alleged to be effective against a multitude of symptoms. In Notas Sobre Plantas Brasileires (1930), M. Penna claimed that Muirapauma treated disorders of the nervous system, impotence, as well as gastronintestinal and circulatory asthenia; and the herb has been in the Brazilian Pharmacopoeia since the 1950s. In 1993, D. Schwontkowski wrote in his Herbs of the Amazon that Muirapauma not only treated impotence, but also frigidity, menstrual cramps and premenstrual syndrome (PMS). One study at the UCLA School of Medicine determined that the roots of this Amazonian tree may improve both erectile function and sexual desire, and two French studies claimed that it improved libido and sexual function. Muirapauma was brought back to Europe by explorers who noted its indigenous uses and aphrodisiac qualities, and it became part of herbal medicine in England, where

Other common names: Common Parsley, Rock Parsley, Garden Parsley, Rock Selinen, Persil Nutritious Parsley is a natural way to good health. This herb helps to relieve indigestion, fluid retention, halitosis, gas and also helps to promote kidney, liver and bladder health. A high dose of vitamins and minerals adds to its all-round healthful benefits. History: Parsley is a biennial or perennial herb that originated in the eastern Mediterranean region as a wild plant, but is now found in cultivation everywhere. The leaves are dark green and shiny and packed with nutrition. For more than two thousand years, it has been highly regarded as a medicinal herb to treat gastrointestinal disorders, and ancient Greeks also valued Parsley for its soothing and diuretic effect on those with kidney and bladder ailments. Galen even recommended Parsley for ''the falling sickness'' (epilepsy), and the Greeks also adorned victors at the Isthmian games with wreaths of Parsley Leaves. Used as a tomb decoration in ancient Greece and Rome, Parsley was thought to possess magical powers and was also associated with the underworld and death. In one legendary Greek myth, King Lycurgus's son, Opheltes, was left for a short time by his nurse who pointed out the location of a spring to thirsty soldiers. When she returned, the child had been killed by a snake, and Amphiarus, the seer and soldier who viewed the incident, said it was a bad omen and correctly predicted his own death in the upcoming battle. He gave Opheltes the surname, Archemorus, meaning ''the first to die,'' and the child became the symbol of impending death. From his blood the first Parsley plants were said to have sprung. What is now an indispensable and nutritious addition to our dinner table was never brought to the table of old, being held sacred to the dead, and it continued to be associated with death through the ages. Although the plant remained an important part of the herbalists' repertoire, it remained associated with magic and the underworld through the Middle Ages as one of the Devil's favorites and could only be counteracted by sowing the

Since it is attractive and tolerates some degree of drought, it is also used in landscaping, especially in areas having a Mediterranean climate. It can, in fact, die in over-watered soil, but is otherwise quite easy to grow for beginner gardeners, and it is very pest-resistant. And guess what? Sea Cucumber is not a cumber at all; it is a marine animal that is rich in protein, vitamins and minerals and yet another gift to our good health from the sea. History: Sea Cucumber is an oblong-shaped, gelatinous, invertebrate marine animal that, as an echinoderm, is distantly related to starfishes and sea urchins. It is aptly named, because it is shaped like a cucumber, and has also been thought to have a distinctly phallic appearance, which may account for its reputation as an aphrodisiac. Like all echinoderms, Sea Cucumbers have an endoskeleton just below the skin, but this can actually be absent in some species. The diet consists of plankton and decaying organic matter found in the sea. One way they might get a supply of food is to position themselves in a current where they can catch foods that flow by with their tentacles when they open. Another way is to sift through the bottom sediments using their tentacles. They can be found in great numbers beneath fish farms. In China, Sea Cucumber is called Hai Shen, which translates roughly into Sea Ginseng, and it is unclear whether this refers to its aphrodisiacal qualities or healthful properties as a tonic for the kidneys and blood. It has been used in China for thousands of years as a treatment for arthritis, fatigue, impotence, constipation, frequent urination and joint pain, and the herb was listed as a medicinal agent in the Bencao Congxin of 1757. The Wild Yam is high in plant hormones, which may be synthesized by the body to support its own hormone health (Wild Yams have provided the source material from which birth control pills are derived). For women who want to continue the normal balance of hormones, benefit from relief of pains and aches or simply enjoy overall good health, why not try an old and natural way with Wild Yam. History: Wild Yam (not to be mistaken for our Thanksgiving sweet yam) is a hardy, twining plant with long, knotty, matted, contorted, ligneous rootstocks. This climbing perennial may grow to a height of twenty feet and bears pointed, heart-shaped, ovate, hairy leaves and drooping green-yellow flowers that appear in summer. The plant thrives in rich, well-drained soil in sun or partial shade and may be found mostly in moist woods and along roads in North America, with many other varieties distributed throughout Central and South America, Africa and many parts of Asia; and the long, branched, crooked woody roots are used for numerous medicinal applications. Yams provide the source material from which birth control pills, cortisones and sex hormones are derived, and until the hormone was synthesized in 1970, Wild Yam was the sole source of diosgenin for contraceptive pills. In Mexico, Indian women utilized the Wild Yam for birth control and to prevent miscarriage; and in the United States, it also played an important part in herbal medicine, where it was employed as a contraceptive, diuretic, emetic, expectorant and remedy for colic and muscle spasms. Wild Yam was traditionally thought to have antispasmodic properties and was promoted for gastrointestinal and menstrual dysfunction. Yams are high in plant hormones, wh

History: Wintergreen is a perennial herb with a creeping stem that sends up erect branches, finely-toothed, ovate leaves of pale green when young, and then leathery, dark green when mature. The shrubby evergreen also bears bell-shaped white or pink flowers that bloom from May through September, followed by scarlet fruits, and the plant reaches about six inches in height. It is rather ornamental and may be found growing in forests or on mountains, thriving in acid soil in partial shade. Wintergreen is so named because it remains ''ever'' green in the deepest part of winter and provides important winter nourishment for deer, partridge and other native fauna. Native American tribes brewed a tea of Wintergreen as one of their many herbal treatments for rheumatism, as well as a pain reliever for headache, fever, sore throat and various aches and pains. The American writer, Henry David Thoreau, described such a tea that was made by his own Indian guide. Many tribes also employed it as an aid to breathing by increasing lung capacity while hunting or carrying heavy loads, and the Montagnais of Canada drank Wintergreen tea to treat paralysis. Other common names: Mojave Yucca, Spanish Dagger, Soapweed, Spanish Bayonet, Needle Palm, Our Lord's Candle An important food source for many early Native Americans, many tribes also relied on Yucca to cleanse and detoxify the body (inside and out!). Today, we still regard Yucca as a wonderful blood-cleansing tonic that helps to rid the kidney and liver of toxins. It is also a remarkable source of healthful nutrients and may even help to relieve arthritis. History: The Yucca belongs to a genus of stiff-leaved evergreen plants, trees and shrubs, and there are about fifty species native to North America, most of them native to the southwestern United States, Mexico and Central America. Some, however, are found in arid areas of southern Alberta. The coarse desert succulent has long, spike-like leaves that resemble a dagger, giving the plant several of its common names, i.e., ''Spanish Bayonet'' and ''Spanish Dagger,'' and many are cultivated for their striking appearance as ornamentals. The various plants may grow anywhere from four to twenty-five feet in height and reproduce only by pollination of the Yucca moth, a perfect symbiotic relationship. Yucca typically grows on rocky desert slopes and thrives in full sun and well-drained soil; it also needs no summer water. The bark of Yucca is gray-brown, and the plant bears white, bell-shaped flowers, sometimes having a purple tinge, produced in a compact, bulbous cluster. Yucca occupied a very important place in the history of the American Southwest as both a food source and medicine, and it also served many other purposes. Navajo warriors carried the dried fruits with them during long journeys as a nutritious food (and soap), and the Hopis especially understood its natural cleansing properties. Several of the southern tribes used Yucca to induce vomiting. The plant was used to cure baldness and treat dandruff, and the fibers in Yucca were utilized in cloth-making, cordage and baskets. In modern medicine, some very early laboratory tests have shown some anti-cancer properties against melanoma in animals and possible anti-malignant growth a
