Brahmi Herb Powder (Bacopa monniera) 8 oz: B
Improves memory, increases learning capacity, relieves stress and anxiety. Ideal for students and the elderly. Nutritionally supports concentration, clarity and memory. Brahmi traditionally used in Ayurveda as a brain and mind tonic. The word ''Brahmi'' is Sanskrit and can be translated from Sanskrit as ''The Goddess of Supreme Wisdom'' because it has helped spiritual seekers for millennia to attain the wisdom that they sought. It is actually one of the 'original' medicines of Ayurveda and is praised in 3000-year-old books. It is used to naturally revitalize nerve and brain cells, to increase mental capacities, memory, concentration, intelligence, mental endurance, verbal articulation and to decrease senility, stress and stress related diseases. Promoting the clarity and mental balance needed to remain calm and efficient in today’s busy world and reducing anxiety and stress, it is an excellent formula for active people and students of all ages. For decades it has been used in the west as an energy tonic and as a smart drug under the name Gotu Kola, which is actually another traditional Ayurvedic herb (Hydrocotyle asiatica, Centella asiatica). Indian Journal of Pharmacology 1997; 29: S359-S365 NEUROPSYCHOPHARMACOLOGICAL EFFECTS OF THE AYURVEDIC NOOTROPlC BACOPA MONNlERA LINN. (BRAHMI) H.K SINGH. B.N. DHAWAN Central Drug Research Institute, Lucknsw 226 001 India SUMMARY Bacopa monniera Linn. (Brahmi) has been used since times immemorial as nerve tonic for Improvement of memory. The authentication of the traditional claims of brahmi was initiated by investigating the effect of an alcoholic extract of this plant on acquisition, consolidation and retention of three newly acquired behavioural responses in albino rats, viz.. a foot-shock motivated brightness discrimination response, active conditioned avoidance response and Sidman continuous avoidance response. The facilitatory effect of the brahmi extract (40 mg/kg, p o. x 3d) was manifest in all the three learning responses as it augmented both the cognitive function and mental retention capacity. The chemical constituent responsible for the facilitator) effect of brahmi on learning schedules was identified as a mixture of two saponins designated as bacosides A and B.The bacosides significantly improved the acquisition, consolidation and retention in the shock-motivated brightness discrimination response, active conditioned avoidance response and produced a dose-dependent facilitation of discretion between an aversive (LiCL) and palatable fluid (sucrose) in the conditioned taste aversion (CTA) response. Bacosides also attenuated the retrograde amnesia produced by Immobilisation induced stress, E C S and scopolamine. They also enhanced protein kinase activity and produced an Increase in protein in hippocampus. :~ Bacosides were also found to be safe in regulatory pharmacological and toxicological studies and were well tolerated by normal healthy male human volun |

Ginseng Root, Red, Medium (Panax Ginseng Root; Ren Shen - Kirin) Whole: 500 gm (1.17 lb): V
Used as a tea, decoction, extract, tincture, food additive and supplement. Chinese Ren Shen, 'root of heaven,' Panax ginseng, Asian ginseng, is native to Manchuria and Korea and is cultivated in China, Korea and Japan. The ginseng plant requires 5-7 years to mature from seed. Ginseng has a sweetly aromatic flavour. Its root has long been regarded by the Chinese as a panacea for illness, though it was usually used by them in a prophylactic (preventive) rather than a curative manner. Many Native American tribes used American ginseng, Panax quinquefolia. Medicinal uses ranged from digestive disorders to sexual problems. The Chinese began to use American ginseng after it was imported during the 1700s. The traditional applications in China are somewhat different from those for Panax ginseng (Asian ginseng), American ginseng being considered a better stomachic. The type and ratio of ginsenosides are somewhat different in American and Asian ginseng, but not radically different. Pharmacologically, ginseng is nonspecific in its effects and is capable of a normalizing action irrespective of the pathological situation. Ginseng's ginsenosides are believed to increase energy, counter the effects of stress, and enhance intellectual and physical performance. Thirteen ginsenosides have been identified in Asian ginseng. Ginsenosides Rgl and Rbl have received the most attention. Other constituents include the panaxans, which help lower blood sugar, and the polysaccharides (complex sugar molecules), which support immune function. Numerous double-blind studies have confirmed Chinese tradition, objectively demonstrating Asian ginseng's ability to lower blood sugar, reduce fatigue and stress, and support the normal function of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis, the hormonal stress system of the body. Ginseng's support of the brain's production of adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH) appears to improve mental performance, learning, and memory and sensory awareness, exactly as Chinese tradition has always maintained. The 1997 Commission E on Phytotherapy and Herbal Substances of the German Federal Institute for Drugs, reflecting the opinion of modern scientific herbalism, recommends Ginseng root [Panax ginseng] 'As tonic for invigoration and fortification in times of fatigue and debility, for declining capacity for work and concentration, also during convalescence.' 'Daily dosage: 1 - 2 g of root; equivalent preparations. Mode of Administration: Cut root for teas, powder and galenical preparations for internal use. Duration of Administration: Generally up to 3 months. A repeated course is feasible.' 'Action: In various stress models, e.g., an immobilization test and the coldness test, the resistance of laboratory test animals (rodents) was increased.' Poria Fungus Root 12:1 Powdered Extract (Poria cocos; Hoelen Fungus; Fu Ling) 10 kg (22 lbs): Q
This fungus produces underground mycelial "tubers" of concentrated tissue, called sclerotia, associated with fir tree roots. In Chinese medicine it is one of the most widely used and highly respected herbs as well as a popular food. The superb yin tonic. It is said that it "restores and refreshes the body and mind, and when used regularly will prolong life." It possesses significant amounts of lecithin, polysaccharides and tetracyclic triterpenes with documented immunostimulant, antitumor, and antiviral properties. Used for forgetfulness and to calm the spirit. Mildly sedative, relaxing to the mind; these anxiety relieving effects are credited with lengthening life as much as anything. Poria also was reported to be popular among Imperial concubines. A typical dose is 6–15 grams, with a neutral taste it mixes well with many foods like soups, warm cereals or smoothies. The mushroom Poria cocos (Polyporaceae) is used in approximately 30% of all Kampo (traditional Japanese herbal medicine) formulas. It consists of several pharmacologically active ingredients, including the vitamin D precursor ergosterol and the triterpene pachymic acid. In Kampo, P. cocos is known as bukuryo and is only used in combination with other herbs. To date, little research has been done on this mushroom in isolation. However, extracts have demonstrated the inhibition of tumor promotion, inflammation, induction, and red cell lysis by reactive oxygen species. In clinical use, poria is part of the multi-herb formulas used for enhancing immunocompetence; in treating suidoku (traditional Kampo medicine diagnosis, which roughly translates into ''water overload'') and various women's health issues, and has many more indications. Currently, poria is part of a United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA)-approved trial of a non-estrogenic multi-herb formula for the management of menopausal hot flashes. In Japan, 148 Kampo formulas are prescribed by physicians on a regular basis. These are pharmaceutical grade, government-regulated prescription medicines that medical students are taught to prescribe and that are covered by the National Health Service. Some poria-containing formulas are more than 1800 years old. Significant clinical experience and preclinical research exists on the dozens of Poria-containing formulas that are prescribed today. P. cocos is certainly safe for human ingestion. |

Ginkgo Leaf Cut & Sifted Cert. Organic (Ginkgo biloba; Bai Guo Ye) 1 lb: K
This is Frontier’s double wall silverfoil pack. Some Frontier packs are double wall wax-lined paper. Can be used as an infusion, decoction, extract, tincture, food additive and supplement. Medicinal use of Ginkgo leaf tea is ancient in Chinese herbal medicine. It helps clear the mind and improve the power of concentration. Modern clinical trials have demonstrated the usefulness of ginkgo in the treatment of Alzheimer’s disease, age-related cognitive decline and depression. Ginkgo's flavone glycosides and terpene lactones do indeed increase circulation to the brain and other parts of the body as well as exerting a protective action on nerve cells. The unique terpene lactone components found in ginkgo are known as ginkgolides and bilobalide. Ginkgolides apparently improve circulation and inhibit platelet-activating factor. Bilobalide protects the cells of the nervous system. Recent animal studies indicate that bilobalide may help regenerate damaged nerve cells. One double blind study found that ginkgo could help people with macular degeneration, an oxidation-related disorder causing decreased or lost vision. Ginkgo’s antioxidant activity in the brain and central nervous system may help prevent age-related declines in brain function. The brain and central nervous system are particularly susceptible to free radical attack. Free radical damage, that is, oxidation damage, in the brain is widely accepted as being a contributing factor in many disorders associated with aging, including Alzheimer’s disease. The 1997 Commission E on Phytotherapy and Herbal Substances of the German Federal Institute for Drugs recommends a dry extract from the dried leaf of Ginkgo biloba for '(a) symptomatic treatment of disturbed performance in organic brain syndrome within the regimen of a therapeutic concept in cases of demential syndromes with the following principal symptoms: Memory deficits, disturbances in concentration, depressive emotional condition, dizziness, tinnitus, and headache.' '(b) Improvement of pain-free walking distance in peripheral arterial occlusive disease in Stage II of Fontaine (intermittent claudication) in a regimen of physical therapeutic measures, in particular walking exercise. (c) Vertigo and tinnitus (ringing in the ear) of vascular and involutional origin.' 'The following pharmacological effects have been established experimentally: Improvement of hypoxic tolerance, particularly in the cerebral tissue. Inhibition of the development of traumatically or toxically induced cerebral edema, and acceleration of its regression. Reduction of retinal edema and of cellular lesions in the retina. Inhibition in age-related reduction of muscarinergic cholinoceptors and 2-adrenoceptors as well as stimulation of choline uptake in the hippocampus. Increased memory performance and learning capacity. Improvement in the compensation of disturbed equilibrium. Improvement of blood flow, particularly in th |

Catuaba Bark 4:1 Powdered Extract 1 kg (2.2 lbs): Q
Catuaba is a medium-sized tree found in the Amazon forest in the northern part of Brazil. In Brazilian herbal medicine, Catuaba bark is considered a central nervous system stimulant with aphrodisiac properties and a bark decoction is used for nervousness, poor memory, and sexual weakness. Catuaba bark has now been used for centuries, with no known side effects or toxicity. The catuaba tree grows in the forests of northern Brazil. It is a small, fast-growing tree with orange and yellow flowers and oval-shaped fruit that is not edible. Catuaba was traditionally drank as a bark decoction (boiling it in water to make tea). Catuaba is reputed to help in fighting dementia, preventing agitation, helping with the insomnia induced by hypertension, stopping forgetfulness, relaxing of the blood vessels to relieve nerve pain, and acting as an overall tonic to the body. Some users have claimed its relaxing effects help with their public speaking, and others say the herb motivates them to exercise more. Researchers in Japan discovered that catuaba is a powerful antiviral and antibacterial compound. Experiments were done in which mice were given both catuaba and lethal doses of E. Coli and Staph infection. In both cases, the herb prevented the bacteria from killing the mice. More amazingly, catuaba has been shown to fight the HIV virus. Researchers gave mice catuaba and HIV, and the herb prevented the animal’s white blood cells from absorbing the virus. More research is still required before catuaba will be used to treat HIV patients. Catuaba’s libido enhancing properties were well known to the people of Brazil, and today it is considered to be a natural aphrodisiac. Acting as a nervous system stimulant, and also nourishing the reproductive systems of males, it helps genitals function so effectively that a common saying among tribes in the Brazilian rainforest is, ''Until a father is 60, the son is his. After that, the son is catuaba's.'' No one is quite sure exactly how the herb functions as an aphrodisiac. |

It is said to calm the nerves, relieve insomnia, ease anxiety, restlessness, depression and emotional stress. The herb is also used to increase blood circulation to the brain (helping poor memory), to the reproductive organs (helping the libido) and to the heart (helping cardiac health). History: Catuaba is a vigorous-growing, small tree that is native to the forests of northern Brazil and has been used medicinally for thousands of years as an overall body tonic and an aphrodisiac. The tree grows to about twelve feet in height and produces yellow and orange flowers and small, dark yellow, inedible fruit. The historic traditional use of this herbal tonic is legendary, and many say it is the most famous of all the Brazilian aphrodisiac plants. The Tupi Indians in Brazil first discovered the aphrodisiac qualities of the plant centuries ago, and many of the other local peoples in Brazil have also been using it for generations. There is even a saying in Brazil that ''Until a father reaches sixty, the son is his; after that, the son is Catuaba's.'' It has been exported to the United States and Canada, where herbalists include it in their treatments for a variety of ailments. There has been much confusion surrounding the actual species of tree that is sold around the world as Catuaba. The Catuaba tree (Erythroxylum catuaba) belongs to the Erythroxylaceae family, which contains several species that are sources of cocaine. This Catuaba, however, contains none of the active cocaine alkaloids. There are many other species sold as Catuaba, but two species of the Erythroxylaceae family: small Catuaba (Erythroxylum catuaba) and big Catuaba (Trichilia catigua) are the preferred Brazilian herbal medicinal species with the longest documented history of use as ''big and little'' Catuaba. Both types are used interchangeably in Brazilian herbal medicine systems for the same con |

Green Coffee Bean is a powerful cardiac and respiratory stimulant that increases heartbeat and blood flow and acts as a bronchodilator to improve breathing. New research shows promising benefits in the area of diabetes, high blood pressure control and antioxidant activity. History: More than a thousand years ago, nomadic mountain warriors of the Galla tribe in Ethiopia mixed deep red berries with animal fat as a food that provided them with strength, endurance and an ''extra something'' that helped them endure long battles. That ''something'' turned out to be the caffeine in the Green Coffee Bean. There are about twenty-five species cultivated throughout the world, and different types of Coffee are preferred in different countries. For example, Coffea arabica (which is preferred in the Americas) is produced mostly in South and Central America, and Coffea canefora [robusta] is grown mainly in African countries, while Caffea liberica is grown (and preferred) in Malaysia and Guyana. Growing in the wild, a Coffee plant may reach thirty feet in height, but under cultivation the heights vary from only about six to fifteen feet, which makes flowering and harvesting easier - and more economical. Coffee is the second most valuable commodity in international trade, ranking second only to petroleum in terms of dollars traded, and it is the world's most popular beverage. The leaves of the plant are generally dark green and ovate in shape, and the plant bears clusters of white, jasmine-scented flowers, which develop into red, cherry-like berries. This ''fruit'' is coated with a thin film (epicarp or esocarpo) containing a sugary mucilaginous flesh (mesocarp) enclosing seeds in the form of two coupled beans. After peeling off a parchment |
